4Good value - very educationalDec 26, 2007
By K. Bonner
I knew from previous reviews that this set did not come in a suitable box for gift giving, but that was fine with me because we always discard the original packaging on any set with small pieces and use baskets or other containers to store the small pieces in anyway - if you read the reviews of the Magnetix brands, half of the people who bought those sets throw out the packaging, store the pieces in coffee cans and give the kids cookie sheets to use as trays to play with them on. Those sets cost about four times the cost of this set. In my opinion, that's an awful high premium to pay for some packaging that, whether it gets used or not, will ultimately wind up in a landfill. As far as presentation was concerned, Santa was creative and just built a couple of little structures out of the set and left them under the tree. My 5 year old was fine with that.
Now, to comment on the actual product: This wasn't the first thing that my daughter gravitated toward on Christmas morning, but it did capture her interest unlike any other building toy she's previously played with. It's great to watch her make complex shapes and to see her quickly pick up on how to create sturdy structures - it's a fantastic learning toy. I'm back on line now to buy a couple more sets to add to it, as we quickly learned that 130 pieces is not enough to play with, especially since my daughter never winds up playing with this by herself - the set is so intriguing that everyone in the family, adults included, wants to build with it.
The only possible drawback is that this is a "no-frills" set - there are no curved pieces, or pieces that light up, metal bases or frames to hang structures on, which is also what you get with the more expensive sets. But if you're a back-to-basics-toy family like us, this is actually not a negative. In fact, I like watching my daughter figure out how to build sturdy geometric shapes, including domes and curved forms using the straight pieces - these are early engineering lessons. But aside from the educational value, there is plenty of solid, addictive building fun to be had with this set - even more so if you buy multiple sets, which you can afford to do at this price.

Update - December 21 2008:
This toy is still popular in my household among family members and guests of all ages. We make sure to have it out on the coffee table during play dates, parties and get-togethers. The pieces are stored in a small galvanized metal bucket, and we usually sit it on a jelly-roll pan as a playing surface. It always gets played with. I think it will be a perennial favorite.

1Very poor qualityFeb 05, 2008
By J. Bennett
I bought this product expecting quality as shown in the picture and as compared to Magnetix, but I was very dissapointed when it arrived. The packaging is not appealing and the piecing were of very poor quality and did not measure up to magnetix. I thought I was getting a better deal, more pieces for less. I ended up returning the item and would have been better off buying the magnetix brand.

3Plain brown boxDec 22, 2007
By D. Kerns
The toy itself is fine, but it comes in a plain brown box. No pictures, no building instructions, nothing to spark a child's interest or excitement, which really stinks since it was a Christmas present for a nephew. I would not have bought it as a Christmas present had I known about the box---presentation matters.

toy came packed in an unlabeled cardboard box. the visual appeal for a child was very low but for the price, the product is quite suitable.
