Scared my childAug 21, 2010 We gave our 3 year old daughter the Fridge Words(tm): Magnetic Word Builder for her birthday 2 weeks ago. We have numerous Leapster products and I had full confidence in purchasing this item. As an elementary school teacher for 11 years, I know the importance in toys like this one. Much to my shock, my daughter is terrified of this toy. Why? Because for whatever reason for the letter A the sound and announcement is "aaaah....monster!" Who ever thought this was appropriate for young children need to actually spend time with a toddler. We spend many times a day pretending monsters are fun and NOTHING to be scared of. Now I have a toy, that I was so happy for her to play with, reinforcing the idea that a monster is scary. At this point I will never again purchase Leap Frog products or recommend them to friends or students of mine. What a disappointment created in this toy.
Says the wrong letters - defectiveAug 21, 2010 Our toy said "e" for "f", "v" for "w", and "k" for "l" right out of the box. This problem has been mentioned by other reviewers. This is a defective product. Why does Amazon continue to sell it?
Captial and lowercase lettersAug 11, 2010 My three year old son had started to take the capital letters from his Alphabet Set and string nonsensical letters into what he called words. He was doing the same in the bathtub with foam letters- as well as pointing to words as we read stories at night. I'm fairly anti flashcard so I decided he was showing readiness for phonetic sounds and word development for something tactile and kinesthetic. As a teacher and a mother we had a great time putting letters together over and over. I like that it sounds out letters he strings together even if it doesn't make a word. I think at this age being a little more holistic is good. I was also please to find that his capital letters and the lowercase letters could work in each set. Both are a lovely on our fridge. There are extra vowels as opposed to just an alphabet set as well.
Did not work for my son !!Aug 10, 2010 I Badly want to love this educational toy, looking at all the reviews. I bought it for my 3 yr old naughty son hoping he will learn creating words, but guess what? He just uses it as a toy but learn nothing from it. :-( He randomly keeps any letter into the slot & just hear the music it makes. it may work for many, but for my son its a total let down ! He started throwing away the letters from the frdige, so now its in my attic hoping it may be useful after a year or so :-( I know couple of my friends said that their kids also did not use it effectively. SO, think twice whether your kid will use this properly or not !!
Fridge Words Magnetic Word BuilderJun 28, 2010 This is a great idea to teach children how to spell and pronounce three letter words. It is definitely worth purchasing; however, there are some common three letter words it doesn't recognize which is disappointing. And even though the letter "Q" is included, there doesn't seem to be any words included. I would definitely recommend it, though.
